While a lot of coaching is X's and O's, a whole lot more of it goes on "outside the lines" and inside the heads of your players. Knowing how to define a philosophy that you can spread to your team and how to maintain solid interpersonal relationships with your players is paramount. Also, knowing how to make the rules of the game work to your advantage and make sure your players understand the pros and cons of their equipment are part of the intangibles of coaching.
