Brine Clutch

The Clutch was the high-end addition to Brine's line back in 2007. Since then there have been several reincarnations of this head model. The original Clutch is not legal for NCAA play. The throat opening is too narrow, but there are other Clutch options now that are legal for NCAA and NFHS play. There is a Clutch Superlight 2X, which is legal at all levels.

Brine has also come out with the Clutch Superlight, but keep in mind that is only legal for NFHS play and not the NCAA level.

The original Brine Clutch head face has the box or Canadian pinched look, great for accuracy as well as ball retention. The catching area opening is reduced a little compared to some others. The length of the head reminds one of the old Warrior Helix, and the shape promotes having a pocket that sits high up in the head. This particular feature is a big part of why the Clutch became so popular and the Clutch style remains a winner with many players.

The scoop is minimized, thin and narrow, measuring less than an inch across its surface. The weight of the Clutch is a very light 136 grams. The scoop is also flatter than some of the other high performance heads made now that integrate a radical curve at the top of the scoop to promote pinpoint accuracy.

The Clutch is offset to the maximum but does curve back slightly toward the scoop. The sidewalls are straight up and down. The throat is not that long where it attaches to the shaft, moving the hand up a little higher than some for perhaps a better feel for the ball in the pocket.

We like the Clutch for attack and midfielders as well, particularly those looking for a little extra pop on their shots, but may not be the best choice for the aggressive defensive player.

SCOOP RATING - Fair.

STRINGING - The holes are plentiful for versatility. The Clutch strings up easily even though there are so many holes. Again, the pocket wants to sit up higher in the head toward the ball release point.

STIFFNESS - The Clutch is average in terms of stiffness, plenty good for the offensive minded player.
