The Gait Mutant is new in 2009 and features a very innovative plastic insert for a player's top two fingers when cradling - a mini version of the same idea on the Nuclear called “Control Grip.” It has a fairly basic head design that very much resembles the Toxic and Nuclear as well. Gait is really going after the mesh crowd with their patent pending Quick Release Sidewall Holes that allow the pocket to be easily transferred out of this head model. Like many Gait heads nowadays, the Mutant is made to be strung with mesh, but we have adapted our style to get Rock-it Pockets in as well. The Mutant weighs 146 grams and is offset, but with perhaps a tiny curve coming back towards the throw on the top/scoop side of the head. There is nothing special about the flatter scoop, but it is slightly different than the rounded Nuclear. There is a place for the top two fingers on the plastic. So the head extends on to the handle itself. We&r're sure the jury is still out on that radical new grip style that is patent pending and means to circumvent a rule, which is often a good way to think. It also might have the player bordering on illegal because technically the player is not allowed to grip the plastic part of the head. Personally we would hate to have that call made against us late in a tight game. We are not sure if we are a big fan of the holes-in-the-head set up, but we suppose that the sidewall set up will work for most kinds of mesh. For sure the scoop holes will not accommodate leathers very well at all, but as mentioned before, our stringing experts can make it work.
