The STX Eclipse was the first goalie stick with open sidewalls and it quickly became and remained one of the most popular heads out there. This head was the first to explore the idea that goalie heads could be curved and contoured just like everyone else’s. It is extremely lightweight and has a great shape to it that allows for maximum ball-saving area.

The Eclipse is not off-set so much as it tapers off towards the scoop.  The sidewalls are straight and angled so that the ball naturally wants to sit much more towards the throat than the Warrior Nemesis.  A lot of goalies still play with the Eclipse because of the large catching area, which is very ergonomically sound.

Since the sidewalls are straight and do not flare inwards like the Nemesis, the head pulls the mesh very tight if it is strung directly against the head. We like this head as an overall goalie head, but the Goal-Ex pocket doesn’t quite form the channel we get with the Nemesis. We leave the pocket slightly shallower so the throws can remain accurate. Since it’s tapered, scooping on the run is a breeze with the Eclipse.

The throat of the Eclipse can sometimes be a problem because the two thin beams connecting where the head screws in will break if the head is not all the way snug on the handle. The holes are not quite as well-placed as the Nemesis, which allow for a very wide range of stringing styles. All that being said, there is a reason that the Eclipse is still popular after all these years. This head is good for goalies of all levels. It weighs about 473 grams strung with the Goal-Ex goalie pocket.
