STX's G22 is one of the lightest heads in the game. New in 2008, the G22 weighs in at a scant 118 grams and was personally designed by Gary Gait, hence the clever name. Similar to the K18, Kannon and X3, the G22 is made to fit on STX's Crankshaft series handle and will only work on an offset handle sold by STX. While we weren't too into this when it initially debuted, the Crankshaft has proved to be a nice way to get a little extra "oomph" on shots and hold the ball in the pocket. The G22 has very little to it. This is understandable, considering how light it is, and STX clearly pulled out all the stops trying to remove weight. The result is a nice feeling head and pocket, but questions about durability remain. Stiffer than some of the other offset 10 degree heads from STX, the G22 mostly resembles the X2 or X3. A moderate curve will give a balanced, smooth release and the flatter scoop should be great for groundballs. New to the G22 from any head we have seen are diagonal holes for the sidewall stringing. While the backside of the head seems to be pretty well-protected, we aren't so sure how the front side of the sidewalls will hold up as the holes there are fairly sharp and could tear strings over time. A raised ball stop area will protect the bottom stringing holes. We're sure this head will be great for advanced players, but newer and more fiscally conservative players may want to wait until breakage reports are in. Note: This head is only suitable for use with the Gait TOS Offset Handles (DB803 TOS and Silencer TOS) or STX Crankshaft Titanium and 7075 10 degree handles.
