The STX Surgeon 10 was the new-for-2011 offensive minded STX head model. The 10 refers to the throat that is wide enough to make this one legal for NCAA play, but the opening at the scoop is less than 6.5" closer to 6" in fact, making it NOT legal at the high school level. The Surgeon 10, like the Surgeon, features the STX, ACP (All climate performance) technology that claims to maintain head shape in all kinds of climate. The STX description for the Surgeon 10 is of a head with a longer, contoured throat for enhanced control when cradling. It is touted as a head built for a quick release and pinpoint accuracy.

The Surgeon 10 has a much steeper curve at the top of the scoop than the Surgeon. This will increase accuracy even further but does not scoop up the ground balls quite as easily as its NFHS legal brother. It is good for one handers and scooping on the sprint.

The Surgeon 10 is also actually a few grams lighter than the Surgeon, and I would say this is due to the narrow opening at the top of the head. Long poles, even good ones in college should not even be allowed by coaches to use heads that are only 6" across the top. They (skinny foreheads) are for players who play with a stick that is 40.05" (40"=legal).

SCOOP RATING - Fair

STRINGING - The holes are the same as the Surgeon. It wants the pocket to sit middle or higher than the middle of the head.

STIFFNESS - Not stiff, but the narrowness helps it to play like it is a little stiffer than if it were 6.5" across the top of the face opening. There is a shorter distance covered which limits the overall flex potential of the head.
