The Cobra meets NFHS specifications, but the throat is too narrow for it to meet up the current NCAA specs. It is legal for high school and club lacrosse play only. There is a Cobra X that is legal for all levels with a wider throat opening. The sidewalls flare inward at the bottom of the side wall, a little bit in the tradition of the Warrior Blade. Whether you want your Cobra unstrung or with bells and whistles, look at the prices, why would you get it anywhere other than from the Stick Guys at Rock-it Pocket?

You need to be careful when putting Cobra heads onto the shaft. It is sometimes a very tight fit.

Staff Review: Warrior Cobra
The Cobra meets NFHS specifications, but the throat is too narrow for it to meet up the current NCAA specs.  It is legal for high school and club lacrosse play only.  There is the Cobra X that is legal at all levels with a wider throat opening..

STATS

The new Cobra is quite lightweight, weighing in at just over 140 grams while also having some really good durability features, like the molding inserts put in the throat area of the head.  The Cobra uses the maximum offset and is comparable to many out there, as in it is substantial.  This one curves down from the throat quickly to give the maximum offset feel.

WALL FLARE

The sidewalls flare inward at the bottom, a little bit in the tradition of the Warrior Blade, but the Cobra is not flared anywhere near that much (Blade), and the Cobra flare is only happening up at the top.

SCOOP

The curve where wall becomes scoop is thick for stiffness through the scoop motion, almost like the Revos.

The scoop blade is thin in a good way for better ball scooping, but the curve at the top and back of the scoop is very pronounced, almost STX-like, so when you lay the scoop on the ground the amount of scoop touching the ground is minimal unless you press it down hard.  The Cobra is great for one-handed scoops and for picking up the ball from the ground in a full sprint when you can't get as low as you would like and still survive the oncoming gauntlet of whacking sticks.

STIFFNESS RATING

I would rate the Cobra as a fairly stiff head and it should keep its shape pretty well.

OTHER STUFF ON THE COBRA

The Cobra shape includes the Warrior patented step-back feature all the way up and down the bottom of the sidewall, just like the original, which protects the stringing from wear and tear that erodes it from the catching, cradling, and scooping.

THE BALL STOPS HERE

The foam ball stop place is built in, or should I say up, rising from the throat, a feature that STX has been using for years the make the head feel and play a little longer.  This also allows for the pockets to have a little bigger bag near the throat area, which helps to keep the ball in when you are getting whacked on the head of the stick.

STRINGING CONSIDERATIONS

The stringing holes allow for easy pocket insertion.  Just follow the holes.  There aren't too many stringing holes like there are on some.  The bottom of the side wall flattens almost totally out, so the holes almost point up and down rather than side to side as most do.  This element also allows for a wider pocket area potential.  The Cobra holes will accommodate leathers as well.

With the sidewall flare placed up high in the head, and with the fairly steep arc on the scoop the Cobra sets up to have a pocket that sits in or above the middle of the head.  In fact, if you just place the Cobra head on a table the scoop tilts down until it almost touches the table surface, so even the center of its gravity is tilted toward the upper part of the head.

The Cobra is a great shape and design for the shooter, but I would recommend this head for any and all positions, maybe even defense, and especially if you are looking for that unique combination of features that gather and make up this Cobra.

The plastic on the Cobra takes dye well.

MORE THAN YOU PROBABLY WANT TO KNOW

The newest Cobra has an old Warrior name, but is quite different from the Cobra that I first designed in 1993, and was named by players on my J.V. lacrosse team at the Cate School in California where I was coaching at the time.  It was the very first Warrior head ever produced, and it grew from an idea scratched on a piece of paper that I had carried around with me for a few years until I was lucky enough to be approached by the Morrows to undertake the 'head project'.  It was the first head design that did not lay flat when placed face down on a table.  The head line visibly moved back or down after leaving the throat area, hanging the pocket further down in the process.  Eventually the wall curved slightly forward again as it headed for the scoop to help with ball release.  It was the first of its kind, and the rest as they say is history.

Since the development that became the original Cobra from Warrior, pretty much all heads manufactured thereafter used this basic visual, offset, drop down, canted technology to some degree because it brings so much to the stick table.  Warrior owns the original Cobra patent and to this day they use it to control copiers and to maintain a pretty large market share of the lacrosse heads that are sold.

The Brine Edge happened right after the Warrior Cobra, maybe 1994, and it has been sold by Brine in the same basic shape and using some form of the original name ever since, and it remains a viable Brine head design today that more than a few players, especially long poles, still like.  The only 'catch' is that Warrior now owns Brine.  They (Warrior) beat them (Brine) to death with their, shall we say, aggressive style of patent play.
