The WARRIOR EMPEROR is new for 2011. It meets all current head specifications for NFHS, but is not legal for NCAA sanctioned lacrosse games. Warrior is promoting this head as an offensive weapon, which automatically means that it is light in weight. Meanwhile it is probably not the best choice for players that tend to be abusive to their heads when they play.

The EMPEROR uses the Warrior nitrogen-injected Noz technology, making it weigh in at less than 116 grams before pocket. It is the lightest one we have weighed in 2011. The face of the head is just slightly reminiscent of the old Warrior Blade in that there is a small "flare" to the inside at the bottom of the sidewall. The sides of the walls are very open, particularly right in the center of the head. This will allow for an ever so slightly better feel for the ball sitting in the pocket, and isn't that better feel of and for the ball something that appeals to any offense minded player?

The side view also reveals a fairly standard off-set look. There is little or no curve back to the top of the scoop and the sidewall actually continues to taper well into the off setting. Strung right it will likely be tough to knock the ball out of this head.

Warrior states that they have "Targeted stiffness in the bottom 1/3 section of the sidewall." This might be important in a head that is so light that violent head motion while cradling or shooting can have an affect on performance and consistency.

The width of the opening of the head near the scoop at the back and at its widest place meets the minimum 6.5" which would make that part legal for any level of play. The throat is not open enough for NCAA standards, but they do have an Emperor X that is college legal. The Emperor wall side steps up quickly toward the scoop, making it 'play' a little smaller for greater ball control and meanwhile making it harder for the ball to be dislodged by a check.

The scoop has a strong curve shape at the top. This is good for accuracy, but puts a little more emphasis on scooping proficiently. The scoop blade is not very wide. The EMPEROR has the Warrior patented step-back technology in the throat behind the ball stop. This helps hide the ball when it is down there. There is not that much protecting the stringing from wear and tear along the bottom of the sidewalls until you get up near the scoop where the strings are very well protected with a step in the plastic. The stringing holes are fairly standard and there are enough for pocket versatility with the right pocket touch. The head will easily accommodate leathers as well.

We like the Warrior EMPEROR for playing Attack. This is high performance head model with lots of 'personality' potential.

Always be especially careful with the lighter head models to make sure you are not 'cramming' the shaft on the head, which might weaken or stress the plastic at the throat. Always make sure there is no movement or rattle possibilities either. You want a comfortable and snug fit for shaft and head. The plastic has a sheen and it dyes well, similar to the Evos and Revos.

SCOOP RATING - Average. The top of the scoop is very curved so you need to push down to get more blade surface in good scooping position. The blade section is not wide. It is important to be accurate when scooping to get maximum efficiency.

STRINGING - The holes make it versatile, but might not be quite as easy to string up as some of the others out there. The natural pocket place has the ball sitting above the center of the head.

STIFFNESS - I would not rate the Emperor as a stiff head model.
